Zulweni Private Game Reserve

Just twenty kilometres (12 miles) South of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, Africa’s oldest proclaimed game park, and 160 kilometres (100 miles) North of King Shaka International Airport, lies a flourishing privately owned game reserve. Aptly named Zulweni, meaning “In Heaven” in Zulu or “Peace be Upon You” in Xhosa, this reserve offers a tranquil getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Situated in malaria free Heatonville in the heart of Zululand, Zulweni forms the Southern Region of the Greater Zululand Wildlife Conservancy (GZWC), a newly formed conglomerate game reserve. It enjoys a warm and temperate subtropical climate with an average 950mm (37 inches) of summer rainfall. The perennial Ntambanana River crossing the northern sector of this region, the Majaji running across the south, and the central Yothu, together with their several tributaries, and many dams, provide an abundance of water for the 60 mammal species, 23 reptile species, 362 bird species, 165 butterfly species, and 88 odonata species found on the reserve.

As a founding member of the GZWC, Zulweni guests have right of access to the full expanse of the conservancy and the great game viewing potential it has to offer.

In this part of the reserve game viewing is somewhat unique. Typically, it’s not essential to rise before sunlight and head out on a long and cold winters drive down bumpy roads in a 4x4 game viewer to have good sightings as many animal species are regularly seen moving in and around our lodges. It is not uncommon for an ostrich to stretch its long neck over the railing on your deck, for a herd of buffalo to amble slowly past, or to have a herd of giraffe bed down for the night surrounding your lodge. Through the night you are likely to hear the eerie “whooping” of hyena as they call to one another and may even get a glimpse of one at sunrise or sun fall. The surrounding lawns of our Imvubu Lodge are well manicured by grazing hippo, wildebeest, zebra, warthog, and the many antelope species on the reserve.

Of course, for the more adventurous, the road trip is a better choice with the added anticipation of finding your favourite species elevating the excitement level and making for a better overall experience.

This is Zulweni, our small piece of heaven on earth.

We invite you to take time out of your busy schedule and unwind in the serenity of this majestic place.
